Artificial Intelligence is increasingly embedded in knowledge-intensive work environments where decisions are complex, accountability is high, and professional judgment remains essential. While explainable AI (XAI) is often presented as a technical solution for fostering trust, existing research shows that trust in AI cannot be reduced to model transparency or system performance alone. Instead, trust emerges from a socio-technical interplay between technology, organizational context, and leadership.
This talk builds on a systematic and bibliometric literature review that synthesizes current research on leadership, trust, and explainable AI in knowledge-intensive settings. The findings reveal a strong research focus on technical explainability, while leadership practices, sense-giving, and trust dynamics remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated. Drawing on this evidence, the presentation argues that leadership is the central mechanism through which explainability, accountability, and appropriate reliance on AI are shaped in practice.
The talk introduces a leadership-centered perspective on explainable AI, highlighting how leaders allocate decision rights between humans and AI, frame explanations as reasons rather than features, and establish governance structures that support both trust and contestability. By connecting academic insights with practical implications for IT governance, audit, and information security, the session provides a structured understanding of how trustworthy and governable AI systems can be realized in high-stakes organizational contexts.
